I'm Amber, the community engagement coordinator at MFB&CC and co-facilitator of LEVL. My degree is in communication studies and nonprofit administration and I have spent all of my many adult years working with children and families through local nonprofit organizations and schools. Although I am passionate about all the work we do here at MFB&CC, LEVL is really what secured my desire to work here.
As a child I experienced food insecurity growing up with a single mom. She left an abusive marriage, went to school and worked hard. We were on SNAP and WIC, I went to Headstart, we lived in low income housing...we had used all the help programs available to us. These programs are what allowed her to leave an unhealthy relationship and provide me with a safe and stable childhood. I grew up and went to college (with a ton of scholarships), got married, worked at some awesome jobs, and waited until my husband had solid employment before having a baby so I could stay home with her. And still, with only a first year teacher’s salary we weren’t making enough to survive. So even though we did everything "right”, we still needed SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid to help us survive those early years. Now that we are both working good jobs and we don’t qualify for Medicaid anymore, we are experiencing a new problem. We haven’t considered ourselves food insecure in a long time, but if we go to see the doctor for anything significant, we are suddenly drowning in medical bills we can’t afford.
From my own experiences raising a family and from all the work I’ve done with children and families, I am extremely passionate about the need for social safety net programs and the need for a change to how we do healthcare in this country. From all of my, and also my husband’s, experience in education I am also passionate about our education system and some things that I believe we could change to support children more, especially for kiddos with unique needs. So over the years I have generally become very passionate about advocacy, equity, and also the power of story.
LEVL integrates my passions in a really beautiful way. It also allows for connection and community building that is very needed right now. I am so grateful to be a part of LEVL and so very honored to get to walk beside our participants as they share their stories. This whole experience is such an amazing opportunity for growth for all of us, and I’m really thankful to be here and really thankful that each LEVL participant chooses to be here with us.
