Medicaid & SNAP Service Requirements

Keep Your SNAP & Medicaid Benefits Working For You

Starting on July 1, 2026, under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” Montana will introduce community engagement requirements for certain Montana Medicaid members. You may need to take action to keep your benefits.

Are You Affected?

The following neighbors must now document hours per week (80 hours per month) of work, training, or volunteering to maintain benefits:

  • Adults aged 55-64 (previously exempt)
  • Parents & caregivers of children aged 14 and older
  • Veterans
  • Neighbors experiencing houselessness
  • Foster youth aging out of care (age 24 or younger or in foster care on 18th birthday).

Your 3 Step Plan for Success

Step 1: Update Your Address: missing mail is the #1 reason people lose benefits. Make sure your mailing address is current by clicking this link or calling 1-888-706-1535.

Step 2: Find Your Notification Letter: Check your mail to find the most up-to-date alert from Montana's Health & Human Services. In the months to come prior to July 1st, 2026, they will likely send out a recertification packet. Submit your renewal packet immediately.

Step 3: Use the Volunteer Option to Meet Your Requirement: Need to meet the 20-hour service requirement? Missoula Food Bank & Community Center is building a network of volunteer sites that can provide the daily logs and verification letters you’ll need. While the state finalizes details, we’re here to help. Fill out the short form below if you’d like updates on where you can complete your hours.

At Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, we believe programs like SNAP and Medicaid help families stay healthy and fed. These programs make sure people don’t have to choose between food and care. They are an important part of ending hunger in Montana.

Montanans may see changes to eligibility requirements. Medicaid changes begin July 1, 2026, and SNAP changes begin January 1, 2027. You may need to take action to keep your benefits.
